This May, join us for the annual Military Appreciation Days in Myrtle Beach. This month long celebration is dedicated to all active military, reserves, and veterans and their families. Area restaurants and attractions will be offering special discounts for servicemen and women, and a variety of special events will be happening throughout the month.
One of the highlights will be the traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall; a half scale replica of the Vietnam Memorial that is dedicated to the 58,000 killed or missing men and women from the conflict. It will be brought into town by a motorcycle escort on May 13, 2014 and will be stationed at the Crabtree Memorial Gymnasium at the Market Common from May 14-18, 2014. Nearly 10,000 viewers turned out the last time Myrtle Beach hosted the monument while on its tour of about 350 communities across the country.
A 5k Run/Walk will begin at 7:30 AM on the morning of Saturday, May 24, 2014. Like many of the events during this month, it is free for active military, reserves, and veterans. Civilians are also welcomed at this event, although there is an additional charge. Information on how to register for this race can be found on at MilitaryAppreciationDays.com.
The “main event” of Military Appreciation Days is the Memorial Day weekend parade, which will begin on Saturday, May 24, 2014 at 10:30 AM. Talk show host Montel Williams will be the Grand Marshal of the parade. Immediately following the parade, a family picnic will be held at the site of the old Pavilion Park from noon until 2:00 PM. There will be kids’ activities, exhibits, and live music provided by the Andrew Thielen Big Band. At 12:30 PM, be sure to stop by the Beard Table to check out the Veteran’s Beard & ‘Stache contest, where attendees are sure to see some incredible facial hair. Once again, this event is free for all military personnel, veterans, and their families.
The final event of the month is the Memorial Day Ceremony at 11:00 AM on Monday, May 26, 2014. This event at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center Plaza welcomes the general public in thanking servicemen and women for all that they do.
